The Executive Committee exists in terms of our constitution to manage the day to day activities of the Chamber. It has many roles and amongst them is the long term viability and health of the chamber.

It approves and oversees the activities of the respective sub-committees.

The aim and philosophy of the Executive Team is to engage as many of the Chamber members as possible. This leads to smaller roles being covered by many and as well allows the Chamber to achieve as much as it does.

Whilst this takes place at a local level members of the Executive Committee engage with and represent on regional bodies. The aim being to be able to advocate from a stronger base.

We are keen to ensure that incoming members are able to transition into their positions with ease and encourage any members interested in contributing at this level to contact our Secretary.

The Purpose of the Committee. The purpose of our Committee is to market and promote the Chamber to the local Hills and district community.

We do this through organising and coordinating the annual Big Breakfast – the Chamber’s major fundraising event.

The funds raised are distributed to deserving groups within the local community.  These groups may be youth support, aged citizens or school students.  The decision on which group is to receive funds is made by the Chamber members.

During the last three years, the Committee has donated approximately $20,000 to the following organisations and individuals:

  • Hills PCYC

  • local School chaplaincy programs

  • Picabeen Community Association

  • Sandy Hobley - Embracing Dyslexia

Benefits for our Chamber generated from the Big Breakfast include:

Raised profile - publicising and promoting the Big Breakfast raises the Chamber’s profile in the local community.

Increased membership - The event attracts employers and business owners, their clients and customers who would not normally attend monthly Chamber meetings.

Getting to know your Chamber more – the committee is a great vehicle for members to work and socialise with other members outside of monthly Chamber meetings.

Benefits of being in the Committee - I have found that working with Chamber members from different business backgrounds and with different business skills has enriched my understanding of the great work the Chamber carries out. All members donate their time and energy for the benefit of the Committee, and I look forward to my meetings and the energy that they generate. Discussion and resolution of issues provides me with a framework for debate which can translate to my business.

Why our committee is the best one to join - Thoughts from a member - My fellow Committee members have been welcoming, supportive and encouraging.  The biggest benefit is belonging to a great group of like-minded people from differing business backgrounds working for a common goal. Everyone is encouraged to voice their opinion, and all opinions are treated with respect.  This in part is due to the direction of the chairperson.  I have been a member for 2 years and would recommend to everyone to become involved.

The role of the Development & Advocacy Committee is to engage with local stakeholders and businesses to create awareness for the chamber. This can be in the form of membership recruitment as well as identifying areas for optimising the value and benefits for our members. Also with a focus on supporting our local organisations with fundraising opportunities and community engagement.

Our prime objectives are to:

  • Promote ‘Buy Local’.  To encourage members  to Dine Locally, Buy Locally, Play Locally and Think Locally.  Doing this creates:

  • Local Employment opportunities;

  • Builds a Stronger Local Economy,

  • More Wages stay Locally,

  • Reduce Traffic

  • Reduce Costs.

On average, 48% of each local purchase from an independent business is recirculated back locally, compared to only 14% at non-local and chain stores. (source Institute of Local self-reliance - 2003)

The Public Relations Committee is focused on raising awareness of the work the Hills and Districts Chamber of Commerce does in support of local business and not for profit organisations. The committee members each have a small role in informing the membership and promoting its activities to the general community. This includes writing the monthly newsletter and other communications to members and guests, keeping social media updated and liaising with media and associated groups.

Being part of this committee offers members the opportunity to raise their own profiles within the Chamber and additional networking forums. If you would like to participate in this committee in any way, please contact Margaret Sim

The Women in Business program has been established to help and support women in business and men in doing business with women. We look to provide different events that are informative, supportive and have easy opportunities to break the ice with other business people. We want to provide different avenues for women to grow their business network.

The women in business committee is a small group and look to have committee members that can think outside the box and can help with organising different and worthwhile events.
