CONNECTING THROUGH CREATION
"People have forgotten what the human touch is, what it is to smile, for somebody to smile at them, somebody to recognise them, somebody to wish them well. The terrible thing is to be unwanted." - Mother Teresa
The Nest Community is an urban retreat based in Everton Park Brisbane, where women and children connect across all generations and diverse backgrounds through craft, creation and cultural traditions, to help reduce social isolation, promote sustainable living and build resilience within the community.
The Nest was established supporting ideas of environmentalism and sustainability. Therefore, we value the re-use of materials and the re-purpose of goods to minimise waste. The community is passionate about affirmative action against landfill through upcycling and recycling, and our organisation is funded through our social enterprise schemes operated by volunteers that support this ethos. These activities include: Community Events, Community Garden, Workshops, Retreats, Forums and “The Nest Haberdashery” (a repurposed art and craft material and equipment shop). Currently over 1000 women connect an utilise the home annually.
In addition, currently, The Nest supports 30 other community groups through donations of skills and materials. For example, recently, the Nest volunteers provided handmade donations to: Boomerang Bags, Uniform4Kids, Women in Crisis, Care kits for Kids, Day for Girls, Rizeup, Aspley Special School, Lovely Lap quilts for the Elderly ,”Purl” Knitting for the Needy, Zillmere Sews, In Stitches, and Restitch.
The Nest Community is generously supported by a many local organisations including: Bunya & Golden Valley Keperra Lions Clubs, Brisbane Visual Arts Community, Mitchelton Rotary Club, RNA Showgrounds, City Chicks Samford, Keperra Bunnings, Evergreen Tree Services, local church groups, individuals, local businesses and government offices.
When you purchase from the Haberdashery, or book into an event or workshop, you are not just purchasing a creative experience for yourself but you are also contributing significantly towards making our activities accessible to those women and children who are less fortunate.
